How to Find the Right Coach for Personal Development and Growth

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, it's a canvas of boundless possibilities awaiting our vision, intention, and action.

The potential for meaningful shifts that ignite the fire within us is palpable. However, in this online world, everyone is an “expert” or a “guru”, the journey toward a purposeful, present, and impactful life can seem daunting, overwhelming and actually, misleading.

In the spirit of facilitating intentional growth, this article is dedicated to guiding you with three steps you can take to help you find the right coach for the year ahead.

What is a coach?

Coaching is a concept that has been characterised in various ways, but at its core, it revolves around facilitating personal change aligned with an individual's desires and guiding them toward their chosen path. Operating on multiple levels, coaching assists individuals in realising their desired self and fosters heightened awareness, enabling informed choices that ultimately lead to transformative change.

“I can't do this on my own, and I don't want to.”

These words echo in the introductory conversations with nearly every coaching client, and they might resonate with you too. If last year left you feeling like you were merely existing, exploring avenues from self-help books to yoga, yet finding no tangible progress, you're not alone.

Stepping into a new year, you may have decided it's time to invest in a coach to fast-track the shift you desire. However, navigating through a sea of self-proclaimed experts can be overwhelming.

That is why I have put together a Checklist to help you find the right coach for you and here are three key steps you can take to get started right now.

Three Essential Tips to Find Your Ideal Coach

  1. Tap into Your Network: Reach out to your connections and seek recommendations for coaches they have personally worked with. Personal referrals often provide valuable insights and testimonials that you can trust.
  2. Check Qualifications and Experience: Verify the coach's qualifications and experience, ensuring they align with the specific changes you aim to make. In a saturated market, it's crucial to distinguish between qualified professionals and those lacking the necessary skills.
  3. Speak to Past Clients: Testimonials are helpful, but don't stop there. Request the opportunity to speak directly to past clients and gain firsthand insights into their experiences. Authentic conversations with individuals who have undergone a transformation under the coach's guidance can be invaluable.

Embarking on a journey of personal growth requires the right guide, and with these tips and the Checklist, you can navigate the crowded coaching landscape with confidence. Your pursuit of a more purposeful and present life starts with informed decisions.

Why you should be careful with the promises coaches give.

I was recently asked by a prospective client to outline the absolute numbers in terms of results they would receive from coaching with me in terms of speaking gigs and warm corporate leads.

My response may surprise you so I thought I would share it…

“My approach is not a one-size-fits-all as every coaching client's needs and ways of working differ."

What I do offer in terms of process flow is the articulation of a clear vision in relation to the growth you seek, a strategy and unique plan of attack to bring that vision to life, support, evidence-based tools and templates to help you take action in alignment with your working style and how you want to show up.

Along with a skillset grounded in transformation, psychology and trauma and experience that spans 20+ years across corporate, entrepreneurship and professionals.

I do not promise clients specific outcomes in terms of leads or sales as these outcomes are dependent on the level of commitment and action taken by my clients.

What I currently see a lot of that I cannot stand in the coaching industry is "gurus", selling dreams and $30k+ months that they cannot deliver and taking money from people to do so.

I am not this type of coach nor do I ever aspire to be. My work is grounded in teaching my clients how to accelerate the impact of their actions in alignment with the person they want to show up as in the world.  I am about sustainable change that empowers individuals to continue their journey long after our work together concludes.
